Eye health videos: short films from my clinic
These eye health videos are short films I have made for my YouTube channel, @DrSoniaMall. They explain cataract surgery, lens implant choices, eye injections and blepharitis in plain language, so you can watch at home and come to your appointment with your questions ready.

Featured: Lens implant choices for cataract surgery
When a cataract is removed, the cloudy lens is replaced with an artificial one, and there is more than one type to choose from. In this film I talk about the lens options and the questions worth asking. The written guide to premium lens implants covers the same ground.
More films
Cataract and Retina, explained
A quick introduction to cataracts and what the operation involves. A good first film if you have just been told you have a cataract. More on the cataract surgery page.
A longer, more detailed look at having a cataract procedure, from the decision to have surgery through to recovery.
What to expect from an injection into the eye, used for conditions such as wet AMD. Read more about intravitreal injections.
How to use these films
The films are general information, recorded to help you understand your options. They are not a substitute for an examination, because the right treatment depends on your own eyes. Some patients find these steps useful:
- Watch the film for your condition or treatment before your first consultation.
- Note down anything that is unclear, or anything that worries you.
- Bring your list to the appointment, and I will go through it with you.
- Watch again after your consultation or surgery, when the details feel more relevant.
For blepharitis, the NHS guide to blepharitis describes how to clean your eyelids at home, which pairs well with my film. For cataracts, the NHS guide to cataract surgery sets out what happens on the day.
When not to wait for a film
Same day
If you have sudden loss of vision, a dark curtain or shadow moving across your sight, new floaters with flashes of light, or a painful red eye that hurts to look at light, do not wait for a reply. Get help the same day from an Optometrist, NHS 111 or eye casualty.
Emergency
Call 999 or go to A&E if you have a red eye with changes to your sight, pain when looking at light, or an eye injury.

Questions about the films
Who makes these films?
I do. They are recorded by me, Miss Sonia Mall, for my YouTube channel @DrSoniaMall. The handle is simply the channel name; as a surgeon, my title is Miss.
Can a film tell me which lens or treatment I need?
No. The films explain the options in general. Which lens or treatment suits you depends on your eyes, your measurements and how you use your sight, which I work out with you at your consultation.
Can I watch the films before my appointment?
Yes, please do. Patients often tell me it helps to know the basics first, so the consultation can focus on their own eyes. You can request an appointment whenever you are ready. My 2026 fees are confirmed when you book.
