Biography

Specialist training, and a career built around the eye

My ophthalmology specialist training took place in the West Midlands and Oxford regions, at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre and Oxford Eye Hospitals. I then went to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London to complete a fellowship in Medical Retina, which covers diseases of the Retina and macula at the back of the eye.

I finished training in 2014, joined the General Medical Council Specialist Register and began working as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. My subspecialty is Complex Cataract Surgery and Medical Retina. My special interests are age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease and retinal vein occlusion, which I treat laser and intravitreal injections.

Alongside this I look after patients with Glaucoma, uveitis and general eye problems, and I regularly run high-volume cataract and lens replacement lists, including premium lens implants. I have performed over 10,000 cataract operations. I am registered with the General Medical Council (6129624): you can check my entry on the GMC register.

Experience that shapes every consultation

Clinical Lead, AMD service

At West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust I was appointed Clinical Lead for the AMD service and helped bring in changes to modernise the Medical Retina service.

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

I have held a substantive consultant post at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Trust.

Teaching

Throughout my career I have taught ophthalmology trainees, medical students, allied health professionals and Optometrists. Explaining things clearly to colleagues has made me better at explaining them to patients.

Research and publications

I have published in peer-reviewed journals, co-authored the diabetic retinopathy chapter of an online ophthalmology publication and presented at national and international conferences. I have also been a sub-investigator in clinical trials of intravitreal injection treatments for AMD and vitreomacular traction.

How I work

I would rather spend longer listening than rush to a diagnosis. Once I understand what is troubling you, I explain what I have found, what the options are and what I would recommend, and then I stay available, before surgery and after it.

Care for complex eye conditions should be based on evidence and tailored to the person in front of me. If you are very anxious, or you find it hard to lie flat for about 30 minutes, I can talk to you about sedation or a general anaesthetic for cataract surgery.
